are absolutely committed to every resource. >> what groups that we found were guilty of this? >> the fbi's leading the investigation and i'm sure in it different setting they can brief you on where things stand. i can tell you is the state department is supporting actively with the fbi is trying to do. i was in libya in september after the benghazi attack to push the libyan leadership to cooperate in the investigation. ambassador larry pope on the ground in tripoli every day. >> let me ask you question on this. >> tunisia also. >> it's very easy to say to government can you cooperate? of course we are going to cooperate. let me ask our own investigation. the night of the attack obviously our people aren't the only ones killed or wounded. did our intelligence investigators or intelligence operatives in that area managed to go to the local hospitals and to question those people who are coming to the hospitals with bullet lands that might? >> i don't know that they were able to do that. their preoccupation -- >> what about the next day? >> sir as you know by the next morning the american pe

of the n.s.a., general alexand alexander, with bob mueller at the f.b.i. we've had eric holder appear before the committee to discuss this. and we have heard from intelligence community professionals involved in carrying out surveillance operations, the lawyers who review these operations and, importantly, the inspectors general who carry out oversight of the program and have written reports and letters to the congress with the results of that report. i'd like to just show that classified letter, if i might. it's classified -- i can't read it to you -- but i just want to make that available -- members know that if they want to read the i.g. letter on why what senator wyden is asking for cannot be done, please, before you vote, go to our skiff and read the letter. i don't happen to have it here but as soon as somebody brings it, i will waive it for a -- i will wave it for a moment so that you see it. the committee's review of f.a.a. surveillance authorities have included the receipt and examination of dozens of reports concerning the implementation of these authorities over the past fo

, the f.b.i. and the n.s.a. have all advised that limiting the ability of intelligence analysts to review and analyze information already in the government's possession under 702 would make these agencies less able to respond quickly during a developing terrorist plot. in sum, review of the information already collected enables the government to protect against a terrorist attack on this nation. as of october 7, 2011, the congressional intelligence and judiciary committees received over 500 pages of information from the department of justice that specifically related to matters covered by this amendment. the senate intelligence committee held a closed hearing in october. the senior senator from oregon attended. these were the issues specifically discussed. in december of 2012, the congressional intelligence and judiciary committees received in excess of another hundred pages of material relating. we held another closed hearing, which the senator attended where these issues were discussed. the inspectors general for the intelligence community and n.s.a. have both provided classified and un

agents wouldn't know whether or not f.b.i. was allowed to track them down. but american laws and the american constitution shouldn't be public, only when government officials think it's convenient. it ought to be public all the time. americans ought to be able to find out what their government thinks those laws mean, and i think it is possible to do that while still ensuring that sensitive information -- information about sources and methods and the operations of the intelligence community are appropriately kept secret. my own view is the executive branch of the united states has so far failed to live up to their promises of greater transparency in this area, greater commitment to ensuring that the public sees how our laws are being interpreted. and as long as there is a gap, mr. president, between the way the government interprets these laws and what the public law says when we're sitting at home and looking it up on your latop, i am going to do everything i can to reduce that gap and to ensure that our citizens, consistent with our national security, have additional informa

food on the table for their families and agencies in charge of keeping america safe like the f.b.i., border patrol, department of defense and others will be short staffed. and families may lose farms and ranches they have been passed down for generations because of the estate tax hike. these aren't wealthy aristocrats. they're honest, hard-working people who get dirt under their nails every day to put food on their tables. they all want in return, all they want is to pass the land they work on, on to their kids and on to their grandkids. these are not just numbers on a page. these are people. and we work for them. they're our employers. montana families sit down together at their kitchen tables every month and make tough choices to make ends meet. they deserve a congress that can do the same. unfortunately, the list of last-minute legislation doesn't stop with the fiscal cliff. our rural economy will take a big hit if the house fails to pass a farm bill. make no mistake, the farm bill is a jobs bill. agriculture supports 16 million jobs nationwide, in montana one in five jobs is ti
